The influence of Sir Robert Cohan, CBE (1925-2021) on the development of modern and contemporary dance is immeasurable.
An outstanding dancer and co-director with the Martha Graham Company, Cohan was invited in 1967 by Robin Howard, CBE to co-found the London Contemporary Dance School and the London Contemporary Dance Theatre, and to serve as the founding Artistic Director of the Place. Cohan, The Place and the LCDT transformed the world of dance in the UK and Europe for decades to come, training and inspiring new generations of dancers and choreographers, and developing new audiences for the art form. In his later years, Cohan remained active as a choreographer, creating new works until the very day he passed in January 2021 at the age of 95.
“The dance happens on the and” is a phrase that Cohan often used whilst choreographing or working with dancers on specific movements. The programme for On The And includes an exciting mix of classic Cohan works created for LCDT as well as newer pieces created for the Richard Alston Company and Yorke Dance Project. Works will be performed by guest artists from those companies as well as the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance and the Royal Swedish Ballet School.
